Public Health Enemy #1

Senior exercisingLack of physical activity combined with a poor diet is the leading underlying cause of death in the United States (behind smoking) making this the #1 public health concern for all seniors – smokers and non-smokers alike.

The good news is that the loss of strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance isn’t inevitable. According to the National Institute on Aging “when older people lose their ability to do things on their own, it doesn’t happen just because they have aged. More likely it is because they have become inactive.”

Physical fitness at any age is a key to Dreaming Bigger, so it’s time to get up, get out, and live! Here are some facts about exercising for seniors.

The Facts:

  • Balance and weight-bearing exercises improve balance and muscle strength – helping you avoid falls.
  • With regular exercise you will feel better and enjoy life more.
  • Regular exercise can mitigate some diseases as well as help to relieve stress.
  • Staying physically active can help prevent or delay certain diseases.
  • Physical activity can actually reduce pain for those who suffer with arthritis.
  • It’s never too late to get started!
